This gentleman's name is Sovonara but he goes by Rara. His family is from the Cambodian descent which lead to Rara's first language being the language they speak in Cambodia.
Rara is extremely intelligent but there has been a communication barrier because his peers and staff at Shafowfax are either non-verbal or speak English. Rara was limited to the ways he could communicate which often lead to behaviors.
Rara was another recipient of an iPad in May. For the past few months, he has been diligently working on the iPad to learn how to navigate it. He also has ProloQuo which helps him be able to communicate with his staff. We practice on a weekly basis to learn where the different icons are. Rara has a work folder where he has the tools to he able to tell his staff when he needs more work, more parts for specific jobs, change to a different job, etc.
Jessica is another recipient of receiving an iPad this past May. Jessica lives in a home through Community Options in York with a 2-1 ratio. When we first received Jessica's case, we heard reports of a lot of physical aggression, verbal aggression, and communication barriers as her first language is Spanish.
With Jessica receiving her iPad through Andrew's Gift, it has closed the communication gap between her and her staff. Staff are able to point to pictures on the iPad and Jessica is able to answer yes/no questions and whether or not she wants what they are pointing to. Jessica has enjoyed picking out items throughout her house that she wanted staff to add pictures of in ProloQuo. Jessica thoroughly enjoys working with staff on the iPad.
Manda received her iPad through Andrew's Gift this past May. Before working on the iPad Manda worked on flash cards with Cornerstone. We reviewed flash cards that included places she goes, food she eats, and activities that she does. Manda is able to verbalize words but it is often difficult for people to understand her due to Manda dropping the first and last syllable of most words.
With the iPad, we transferred all the flash cards into ProloQuo. Now Manda is able to identify all the icons within ProloQuo. She now has the ability to use the iPad to help her with communicating with both her family and others in the community.
Giovann Green is shown here with his iPad and Otterbox case provided by Andrew's Gift. He is very excited to be able to utilize his iPad and ProliQuo to communicate with his coworkers and staff at his day program.
Thank you so much for presenting me with ability to improve my communication. I’ve had my new communication device and communication software for almost one month. I like to take pictures of my family and put them in Proloque so I can share about me and my favorite things. Some of my friends at work also have communication devices! – Ron
I am Samantha Pettit and I just received an Ipad and Proloque from Andrew’s Gift. I love being able to tell people about my 4 cats, millions of fish and jumping frog.
I also use my Ipad to express my emotions. Thank you for the gift of expression.-Samantha Pettit
Jackie Estep received his iPad in May. Since that time, he has used the Proloquo application to make requests and converse with others. He also uses the ESPN application to look at sports scores daily. Jackie's mood and quality of life has changed to the point that behavioral issues (refusing meds/hygiene/food and physical aggression) are almost non-existent. He thoroughly enjoys the one-on-one attention he receives due to the iPad.
William Dove received his iPad in May. He only recently purchased the Proloquo application and is in the processing of learning how to utilize it. However, William has been using the Bitsboard application to work on spelling and do puzzles. He uses the Choiceworks application to help him move through his routine and the timer to work on waiting.
